LASIK and Laser Eye Surgery Co-Management

LASIK is a quick, comfortable, outpatient surgical procedure that uses a laser to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and/or astigmatism. With LASIK, a thin flap in the cornea is created using a laser (“bladeless”) or a microkeratome. After the flap is created, it is gently lifted aside, where an additional laser sculpts the underlying corneal tissue to precisely adjust your prescription. In finishing the procedure, the flap is laid back in place, covering the area where the corneal tissue was removed.

With nearsighted people, the goal of LASIK is to flatten the too-steep cornea; with farsighted people, a steeper cornea is desired. LASIK can also correct astigmatism by smoothing an irregular cornea into a more normal shape.

If you are considering LASIK eye surgery, your first step is to undergo a comprehensive examination with one of our doctors who will evaluate whether LASIK is right for you. Our doctors will examine your eyes to determine their health, what kind of vision correction you need, and how much laser ablation (corneal tissue removal) is required. The doctor will also determine if there are any health or eye conditions that may complicate the LASIK procedure.

If you're not a candidate for LASIK, you may qualify for another laser eye procedure such as PRK (similar to LASIK but without the flap). Your prescription and eye structure will be considered to help determine which procedure is best for you.

Dry Eye Treatment

“Dry eye syndrome” is one of the most common complaints treated by eye doctors today, especially in Colorado's dry environment. Persistent dryness with redness, grittyness, burning and/or contact lens intolerance of are often symptoms of dry eye syndrome. Usually, this is an ongoing condition that can be managed with lubricating drops, humidifiers and lacrimal plugs. For more detailed information on Dry Eye Syndrome - symptoms, causes and other treatment options, click on EYECYCLOPEDIA in the column on the right and enter Dry Eye in the Keyword search. If you are experiencing these symptoms, please let us know so that we can discuss your individual options.

Early Detection of Glaucoma and Retinal Disease

Glaucoma affects an estimated 3 million Americans, with over 100,000 blind to this disease. We take the health of your eye very seriously, and this is one of the reasons we use the latest technology, Stratus Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT), to examine your eyes for glaucoma and retinal diseases. The Stratus OCT was developed to diagnose and monitor a patient's eye health through an ultra-high resultion tomographic imaging scan of the optic nerve head, nerve fiber layer, macula, and surrounding retinal structures. The test results using the Stratus OCT provide our doctors optimum information to diagnose, treat and provide ongoing management for patients with glaucoma and retinal diseases.

Pediatric Services

Our office takes great pride in caring for patients of all ages - from infants to seniors.

One in every 10 children is at risk from undiagnosed eye and vision problems, yet only 13 percent of parents with children younger than 2 years of age said they had taken their child to see an eye and vision care professional for a regular check-up or well-care visit.

Early intervention is critical to successful and cost-effective treatment. Despite the nation’s present system of school vision screening, there exists a lack of understanding by the public of the importance of periodic professional eye and vision assessments. Unfortunately, during the course of their young lives, most children probably never see an eye care practitioner who can provide the kind of professional eye assessment necessary to identify critical eye and vision problems at an early stage, explain those conditions to parents, and provide the care necessary to correct those problems.

Our office compassionately assists you in making sure that your children's visual and medical eye health care needs are met.

Do you know that:

  • 1 in 10 children is at risk from undiagnosed vision problems.
  • 1 in 30 children will be affected by amblyopia – often referred to as lazy eye – a leading cause of vision loss in people younger than 45 years.
  • 1 in 25 will develop strabismus – more commonly known as crossed-eyes – a risk factor for amblyopia.
  • 1 in 33 will show significant refractive error such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
  • 1 in 100 will exhibit evidence of eye disease – e.g. glaucoma.
  • 1 in 20,000 children have retinoblastoma (intraocular cancer) the seventh most common pediatric cancer.

Surgical and Co-Surgical Eye Care

Our office offers the most modern surgical and co-surgical management procedures and follow-up care for numerous ophthalmic surgical disorders including: Cataract, Eyelid, Glaucoma, Pterygium, Refractive, Retina, and others. Our office will work hand-in-hand with you during the pre-operative assessment, discussion of findings and options, scheduling of your procedure, and completion of your post-operative care to assure that your surgical experience is as compassionate, comfortable and successful as possible.

Optomap® Retinal Examination

Our office offers the Optomap® Retinal Examination. This state-of-the art scanning laser technology allows your doctor to examine a digital image of your retina (similar to a photograph). Signs of sight and life threatening diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal detachments, cancerous tumors, diabetes and high blood pressure are but a few of the conditions that can be effectively observed with this technology. When complimented with (and sometimes without) pupil dilation the Optomap® improves your doctor’s ability to determine the health of your eyes. The Optomap® is quick, painless, and will be saved as a permanent part of your patient record.

The Optomap® produces a single 200 degree ultra-wide field image of the retina, allowing your doctor to see more of your retina at once than ever before.

The Optomap® Retinal Examination offers many advantages including:

  • Provides an ultra-widefield view of the retina
  • Comfortable and quick image capture
  • Painless, quick and non-invasive
  • Assists in helping you to understand your eye health
  • Provides permanent records for future comparison

As a result, all of our doctors recommend that you obtain an Optomap® Retinal Examination every year.
